目がテン・・・ は？

米軍ハウスのゲートでアメリカ人講師を待っている間に、生徒のAさんにご質問をいただきました。
「目がテンね」と言いたかったんだけど・・・

驚いたときはたしかにいろいろな表現が存在しますね。

I dropped my jaw. That news is jaw-dropping ( jaw は　アゴという意味です）

「目がテン」という表現に一番近いのは
　
You ( I ) got a blank look! ではないでしょうか？

結局

I am surprised. と表現するのが一番簡単ですね。

ところで、先日当スクールのアメリカ人講師に生徒達は ～ing と過去分詞の区別が苦手だという指摘を受けました。

I am surprised. I am excited.

などは間違えずに使えるのですが、

This news is surprised. The baseball game was excited.

などのように誤って表現する生徒が多いとのことです。



This news is surprising.

The baseball game was exciting.

が正しい表現ですね。非常に単純な決まりなのですが、ご存じない方も多いようなので、この場を借りてご説明いたします。


interest surprise excite thrill amaze などのように感情を表す動詞は
主語が人だと　　過去分詞

I am interested in English. He is surprised. We are excited. Are you thrilled?　They are amazed.


物が主語だと　　～ing
English is interesting. The news is surprising. The game was exciting.　The story is thrilling. It is amazing.
